Govt proposes Cambridge development corp

The government is proposing a new development corporation in Greater Cambridge, to help boost economic growth in the Cambridge to Oxford corridor.

The blueprints for this government-established development corporation have been set out by housing and planning minister Matthew Pennycook.

The proposed body would aim to support the creation of thousands of jobs in construction, bioscience, education and hospitality.

A consultation has now been launched to gain insights from residents, local leaders and businesses in and around Greater Cambridge. This will also cover the influence the development corporation would have on planning decisions to approve new homes, employment space and critical infrastructure.

The consultation will run for eight weeks.

“This government is determined to realise the full potential of Greater Cambridge to the benefit of its existing communities and the country as a whole,” said Pennycook.

“The centrally led development corporation we are proposing would provide us with the necessary powers, authority and access to finance to unleash ambitious and high-quality sustainable growth in Cambridge and its environs in the years ahead.”
